I found Next of Kin to be a tense but ultimately fragmented thriller that attempts to tackle heavy contemporary themes of radicalization and family loyalty within a high-stakes conspiracy. The series follows a doctor whose life is upended after her brother is murdered abroad and her nephew is suspected of involvement in a terrorist network. I was initially drawn in by the show's focus on the psychological and social pressures faced by a modern British-Asian family caught in the crosshairs of a national security investigation, providing a more intimate perspective than typical counter-terrorism dramas.

However, I felt that the narrative struggled to maintain its momentum as it transitioned from a grounded family drama into a more conventional, fast-paced political thriller. While the lead performance brings a necessary emotional weight to the story, the plot often relies on increasingly improbable character decisions and convenient coincidences to drive the mystery forward. The dialogue can occasionally feel heavy-handed, and the secondary characters lack the depth needed to make the global conspiracy feel truly visceral. It is a decent watch for those who enjoy topical, suspenseful mysteries, but it lacks the narrative cohesion and grit found in more focused investigative thrillers. For me, the execution didn't quite match the ambition of its premise.

My Rating: 2/5
