I found Thieves of the Wood (De Bende van Jan de Lichte) to be a rugged and visually evocative historical drama that provides a gritty look at the life of an 18th-century outlaw. Set in war-torn Flanders, the series follows an idealistic bandit who leads a revolution among the marginalized and oppressed. I was particularly impressed by the show's commitment to a visceral, mud-and-blood aesthetic, which effectively strips away the romanticism usually associated with legendary highwaymen to reveal a world of stark poverty and social injustice.

The lead performance is grounded and effective, portraying a man caught between his own survival instincts and his desire for systemic change. I enjoyed the way the narrative explores the complex political landscape of the era, though I felt that the pacing occasionally stumbled as it moved between different factions and subplots, sometimes losing the momentum of the central rebellion. While the production values are high and the world-building is immersive, some of the supporting characters felt slightly underdeveloped, making it difficult to fully invest in the broader ensemble. It is a solid, well-crafted drama that offers a unique perspective on class struggle through a historical lens, even if it doesn't quite reach the narrative complexity of the genre's top tier. It remains a compelling watch for fans of atmospheric and grounded historical thrillers.
