Collateral

Network Netflix

I found Collateral to be a sleek and ambitious four-part thriller that attempts to tackle a wide range of social issues through the lens of a single murder investigation. The series kicks off with the shooting of a pizza delivery driver, and I was immediately drawn in by how the narrative spirals outward to include politicians, members of the military, and the clergy. It is a show that feels very current, using its mystery to explore the systemic failures of modern institutions with a sharp, almost theatrical writing style.

While the performances from the central cast are top-tier and help to ground the drama, I felt that the show’s short run time meant some of the many subplots were a bit overcrowded. The dialogue is snappy and intelligent, though it occasionally feels more like a series of focused monologues than natural conversation. It is an engaging watch for those who appreciate a "whydunnit" over a traditional "whodunnit," providing plenty of food for thought despite its brisk pace. It is a solid, well-made drama that is easy to binge in a single sitting.
